Equity in Cancer Genetics
Our Research Project
Cancer is a leading cause of death in Canada, and genetic testing is an important tool for the prevention of this disease. Along with prevention, genetic testing is key to early detection and testing for at-risk family members.
Right now, racial minorities and underserved groups face a significant gap in accessing genetic services. This lack of information and access to medical care means these groups face worse health outcomes.
Our Goal
The aim of our project is to co-design guidelines and interventions to improve access for underserved communities to cancer genetic services. These interventions will be designed in partnership with patients, clinicians, researchers, and decision-makers to ensure they are practical and equitable for all. In order to achieve this goal, we have three main project aims.

Aim 1
Characterize the nature and extent of racial and ethnic disparities in cancer genetic service use. This will include diagnoses of cancer, referral to genetic services, and recommendations for risk management.

Aim 2
Explore the experiences, barriers, and enablers to cancer genetic services among:
1. Racialized and ethnic patients
2. Health care providers
3. Cancer care decision makers

Aim 3
Explore the experiences, barriers, and enablers to participating in genomics research among:
1. Racialized and ethnic patients
2. Genomics researchers
3. Research leaders
